Nayib Armando Bukele Ortez is a Salvadoran politician and businessman who has served as the 43rd president of El Salvador since 2019. He was previously elected mayor of Nuevo Cuscatlán in 2012 and later as mayor of San Salvador in 2015. Bukele has gained international attention for making Bitcoin legal tender in El Salvador, the first country to do so, and for his controversial tough-on-crime approach that has dramatically reduced gang violence but raised human rights concerns.
