About Recep Tayyip Erdoğan

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is a Turkish politician serving as the 12th and current president of Turkey since 2014. He previously served as Prime Minister from 2003 to 2014 and as Mayor of Istanbul from 1994 to 1998. He has been described as an authoritarian and a populist. Under his government, Turkey has experienced democratic backsliding and censorship of the press. Following a constitutional referendum in 2017, Turkey's parliamentary system was replaced with a presidential system.
